Shopping for clothes for a baby is always fun and exciting as newborn and infant’s clothes are so small that everything is adorable. However, not all baby clothing is created equally. Some things are unnecessary and others can easily be overlooked. Like anything, it’s nice to have a few tips before jumping in head first and hitting the “buy” button in your favorite online baby boutique.
Check baby registry or wish list
If you are shopping for a baby shower be sure to check and see if the mommy-to-be has a registry or wish list at a specific store. She may have listed specific clothing items she would like or prefer for her little one. Some moms only want organic clothes, others have favorite colors or themes and so on.
Seasonal clothing
Consider the seasons and changes of weather when purchasing baby clothes. Unlike adults who can easily throw on a jacket or quickly change themselves as they need babies cannot and need to protected from the elements at all times. Make sure you buy warm clothing for the colder months and looser fitting attire during humid months. This brings us to the next consideration – size.
Size
A three month baby outfit does not necessarily mean baby will wear that at the age of three months, it is only a approximate figure. If you expect the baby to be big or the baby is large then a three month outfit will likely only last until he is six weeks old. However a premature baby might be three months old and still wearing newborn clothes. It is another factor to consider when selecting specific sizes.
The type of fabric you choose is very important for babies because their skin is ultra sensitive. Several rougher fabrics or those with patches, complicated sewing techniques and appliqués can irritate a young baby’s skin. Avoid overly complicated outfits or rough fabrics for this reason.
Keep an inventory
Keep track of what you already have in each size so you do not end up with ten pairs of pants in six months and no bottoms for the nine months clothing period. Having a general idea of what you already have will help prevent you from overbuying or forgetting things you actually need.
Plan ahead
Babies grow fast so never buy too many items in one size, it can be a waste. When sales pop up consider buying items ahead out of season to save money while still getting quality clothing.
